09 Apr Ceremony, Ubud
For the last few years we have partnered with the growing retail brand Ceremony, which has 4 stores in Ubud, Bali and one on Gili Air. The partnership came about after Cassandra met energetic couple Isil and Mustafa while sourcing furniture just after the pandemic. Both at the threshold of starting a new chapter, Isil and Cassandra realized they had more than the love of home design in common. Sharing ideas and knowledge resulted in a collaborative friendship culminating in a retail partnership.
Ceremony celebrates the art of life. Offering crafts from around the archipelago, focusing especially on primitive arts, matching a tribal home interior esthetic with a fashion line made of luxurious natural fabrics featuring modernist tribal prints. Inspired by the rituals of Balinese life, Ceremony shops are treasure troves of fashion, home ware, incense and jewellery.
Other than a productive friendship, the collaboration has spurred on the evolution of the Emi & Eve brand. While committed to using bullet brass wherever possible, it became clear a while ago that using only recycled bullet brass was holding the brand back from evolving creatively as well as in its product offering. Having moved to Bali allows us to incorporate various other artisanal crafts, elaborating on our love of craft traditions, blending them with innovation while still staying true to our other brand pillar of elevating waste materials.
Our network of artisans now includes a skilled bone and horn carver, along with local brass casting specialists and jewellers. Early on, while getting to know a new jeweller in the silversmithing village of Celuk, and telling them about our origin story, they said they would give it some thought. The next time I went to visit them, they produced a bag of bullets in front of me. Apparently there are plenty of bullets in Java (from Dutch, Japanese, and civil events) that are used for casting and jewellery making here too.
